The Andaman, a Luxury Collection Resort, Langkawi

The Andaman, a Luxury Collection Resort located in an idyllic tropical setting on Malaysia's Langkawi Island, is cosily tucked away between a 10 million year old rainforest and the tranquil Datai Bay and an 8,000 year old fringing coral reef. The resort has created a Coral Nursery, believed to be the first of its kind in South East Asia and has won numerous awards and accolades in recognition of its commitment to environmental practices. In addition, Datai Bay is recognized as the 9th best beach in the world by National Geographic. The Andaman is also a family friendly resort and offers an extensive programme to our little guests at the Young Explorers Club.

A Brief History

Embracing Conservation

Built in 1996, The Andaman sits on the fringe of an emerald rainforest believed to be 10 million years old – the re-growth after a meteor crashed into the island. To ensure minimal impact to this ancient space, the building was designed to live in harmony with the rainforest, as evidenced the structure's elongated and unconventional shape running north to south. The resort also pays respect to rich culture and tradition of the locale. For example, the Balai Nobat replica in the lobby is a tribute to the traditional structure built for the royal orchestra in tribute to royal family of the Malaysian state of Kedah. Langkawi itself is known as 'Permata Kedah' - the Jewel of Kedah. The Andaman proudly joined The Luxury Collection in late 2009.

On 26th December 2004, a terrible tsunami that swept through the region also caused devastating damage to the 8,000 year old fringing coral reef that sits right in front of The Andaman. In absorbing the tremendous energy and impact of the waves that entered the bay, the coral reef helped ensure that nobody was injured and the resort escaped damage. In an effort to pay back this debt to Mother Nature, the resort has created a Coral Nursery, believed to be the first of its kind in South East Asia. It is here that guests can participate in the unique and inspiring activity of transplanting corals which, after a period of nurturing, will be returned to the sea in Datai Bay where they will bloom and blossom as part of a healthy new coral colony.
