The Andaman's Underwater Treasure

Nature  |  Coral  |  Activities  |  Our Green Journey  Btn CoralCalendar

Not many places in the world can offer a tropical rainforest AND a coral reef within a 100 meters of each other. The Andaman, a Luxury Collection Resort, Langkawi most certainly can.

The Andaman is not only blessed with a stunning 10 million year old verdant rainforest as its backdrop, but beneath the glistening waters of the bay fronting the resort lies another underwater rainforest - a coral reef estimated to be between 6,000 and 8,000 years old. While this reef is only a fringing reef, and not ideal for snorkeling, it provides a great trail for reef walks where one can learn more about marine biology.

Representing only 0.1% of the ocean ecosystem, coral reefs provide a home for a quarter of all marine species. These underwater structures also protect shorelines by absorbing wave energy, allowing many coastal areas and small islands to remain in existence while through the slow erosion of dead coral, they generate coral sand - fine, white granules that make up some of the most pristine beaches in the world.

Southeast Asian coral reefs have the highest levels of biodiversity for the world's marine ecosystems, serving many functions from providing a livelihood for fishermen to being a source of medicine, jewelry and construction materials.

However, Southeast Asian coral reefs are now the world's most threatened, facing detrimental effects due to variety of factors. Coastal development, chemical runoff from the land, and destructive fishing practices head the list.

The Andaman is embarking on a coral reef enhancement program to heal the reef that fringes its shores. We pledge to donate USD10 from every room booked through our packages featuring our Coral symbol towards our Coral Conservation Project, so that we can ensure our underwater rainforest blooms and flourishes for thousands of years to come.

Coral Conservation Project

Reef Clearing
During low tide, our resort team will spend a couple of hours removing loose, dead coral as well as other manmade debris that has been caught up in the reef. Guests are welcome to join the resort team in this unusual but truly meaningful activity, as we embark to save the world, one polyp at a time!

Reef Walking
Reef Walks are ideally carried out when the tides are below 0.9m. During these times which occur between 2 to 3 times a month, we will be organizing guided walks where our Marine Biologist and Naturalist take you out to see amazing reef creatures and learn about their habitat, understanding the fragility of this eco-system.

When our guides are not around, we have put reef walking trail markers in place that you can follow, as well as a guide of things you can look out for.

Spaces are limited to 12 people per walk. Please book through our Nature Desk at the lobby. Guide notes, reef walking shoes and reef walking stick will be provided from the water sports hut.
