On 1st December 2014 The Andaman joined forces with Lafarge Malaysia and Universiti Malaysia Terengganu to form an academic partnership aimed at research and development in support of an Artificial Reef Module System (ARMS) in the vicinity of our bay.
The ARMS project consists of the deployment of artificial reef modules to assist in the regeneration of our our precious fish stocks and reef fisheries. The initiative aims to provide a sustainable fishing industry for the next generation of local fishermen.
A total of 52 Artificial Reef Module System (ARMS) has deployed, complementing the five released into the seabed last year. This will cover over 1,000 square-metre area with a maturation period of approximately 10 years, to counter the decline of the corals due to the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, as well as ocean acidification caused by carbon dioxide.
The modules were created specifically for the unique nature of the existing coral reef fish species at Datai Bay by Dr Gerry Goeden, Consultant Marine Biologist at The Andaman, a Luxury Collection Resort Langkawi in partnership with Mr Kee Alfian, Reef Ecologist, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.
The reefs provide home and shelter to over 25% of fish in the ocean and up to two million marine species. They are also a nursery for the juvenile forms of many marine creatures. We have a wonderful opportunity to not only improve the environmental ‘condition’ of Langkawi’s reefs and fisheries but to create educational, recreational, and research activities. Great location, great hotel, great facilities and awesome coral farm to top it all. Met all the expectations that me and my wife had of the hotel. Prior to booking, had read a lot of positive reviews and some were simply hard to believe as they were too good to be true. But post the stay, can confidently state that it was a trip of a lifetime and we loved every moment there. The staff also made a huge difference.
