Artificial Reef Module System (ARMS)
Coral Conservation l Artificial Reef Module System (ARMS)
On 1st December 2014 The Andaman joined forces with Lafarge Malaysia and Universiti Malaysia Terengganu to form an academic partnership aimed at research and development in support of an Artificial Reef Module System (ARMS) in the vicinity of our bay.
The ARMS project consists of the deployment of artificial reef modules to assist in the regeneration of our our precious fish stocks and reef fisheries. The initiative aims to provide a sustainable fishing industry for the next generation of local fishermen.
A total of 52 Artificial Reef Module System (ARMS) has deployed, complementing the five released into the seabed last year. This will cover over 1,000 square-metre area with a maturation period of approximately 10 years, to counter the decline of the corals due to the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, as well as ocean acidification caused by carbon dioxide.
The modules were created specifically for the unique nature of the existing coral reef fish species at Datai Bay by Dr. Gerry Goeden, Consultant Marine Biologist at The Andaman, a Luxury Collection Resort Langkawi in partnership with Mr. Kee Alfian, Reef Ecologist, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.
The reefs provide home and shelter to over 25% of fish in the ocean and up to two million marine species. They are also a nursery for the juvenile forms of many marine creatures. We have a wonderful opportunity to not only improve the environmental ‘condition’ of Langkawi’s reefs and fisheries but to create educational, recreational, and research activities. It was an extremely memorable trip. We went for to celebrate our anniversary and it was a wonderful experience. I booked for a sea view room and the first room I got was sea view only, however I expected a bit more undisturbed sea view. In a while they shifted to me another room. What was more surprising was they have kept a sorry card and gave a champagne :) :) I was surprised to see the gesture... the view is extra ordinary and you will never feel like leaving the place... the spa, bar, pool, restaurants are were excellent... truly worth visiting this place !!!
